The Royal Society of Chemistry (South Africa, Southern Section) has renamed their Annual Christmas Lecture the Jack Elsworth Christmas lecture in memory of the late UCT chemist.

Dr Jack Elsworth, a retired chemistry lecturer, died suddenly earlier this year after contracting a rare form of septicemia.

The society's latest bulletin said the lecture had been renamed " – in memory of a man who did so much to promote chemistry; in particular, with the aid of his unforgettable lecture demonstrations held annually at the University of Cape Town".

It is fitting that the first Jack Elsworth Christmas Lecture, A Chemical Cracker, (December 1, 2003) will be presented by Karen Wallace (senior scientific officer) and Bergert Blom (MSc student), both of UCT's chemistry department.
