A UCT housing development and management master's student was recently awarded the National Housing Person of the Year Merit award.
Nominated by a group of housing practitioners, Kgomotso Mahlobo received her prestigious award at the Institute of Housing's Annual Conference and Awards. The honour comes on the heels of Mahlobo's provincial housing award in the North West Province.
Based in Mafekeng, Mahlobo travels to Cape Town for her modules. She has been appointed CEO of the North West Housing Corporation (NWHC), and has played a strong role in promoting the involvement of women in housing.
In her research, Mahlobo focuses on removing the barriers that prevent women becoming involved in housing construction and provision. (Government has set a target of 10% involvement by women in the sector.)
Also a graduate of Cornell University in the United States and a mother of two, Mahlobo said: "I have a wonderful, loving husband, and a family that is very supportive ofwhat I do."
