Sports scientists honour fallen colleague

29 December 2009

Master's student Benoit Capostagno is the first winner of the Andrew James Cathcart Sports Science Prize, established by the Medical Research Council/UCT Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine (ESSM) in honour of the University of Glasgow scholar who died in a cycling accident in Cape Town in 2009. Cathcart was working on a research project at ESSM at the time. The award is made up of a R15 000 travel purse to attend the annual conference of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science. Befitting Cathcart's own interests – he was an avid mountain biker – the prize will be awarded to a sporty master's or PhD researcher who is keen to translate research into sporting practice.
