UCT academic awarded the Virchow Prize 2024 for pioneering contributions to global health
Professor Lucy Gilson, head of the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Health Policy and Systems Division , has been co-awarded the prestigious Virchow Prize 2024 . This recognition, under the high patronage of the President of the German Bundestag, comes with a total award of €500,000 and honours Gilson's holistic and systems-based approach to safeguarding human and planetary health.

Marine species find new homes amid climate change – but at what cost?
A new study led by researchers at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Climate Risk Lab has revealed that climate change will continue to create opportunities for thousands of marine species to colonise new habitats, even if the world continues to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The study’s title is “ Temporal dynamics of climate change exposure and opportunity for global marine biodiversity .”

UCT demographers highlight serious concerns with 2022 South African census data
Professor Tom Moultrie and Emeritus Professor Rob Dorrington, demographers from the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Centre for Actuarial Research (CARe), have identified significant issues with the 2022 South African census. Their expertise, particularly in analysing post-apartheid South African census data, lends weight to their conclusion that the results of this census, with the highest undercount ever measured and reported by the United Nations Population Division , may not be fit for purpose .

In a paper published in a peer-reviewed journal, Communications Biology , researchers from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Yale University argued for the implementation of informed proxy or relational autonomy consent in ancient human DNA research, where the deceased may be represented by living people the research affects.
