Celebrating 100 years of Zoology at UCT

03 March 2003
THE UCT Department of Zoology recently hosted the first of several centenary celebrations that will be held throughout the year.

The celebrations kicked off with an exhibition and lecture series, 100 years to the day after the department first opened its doors to the first zoology students at UCT.

The lecture series, Zoology: Then and Now, featured zoology lecturers, past and present, dressed in Edwardian dress. Littered with historical anecdotes, the five 15-minute lectures sketched the department's humble beginnings in 1903 as well as the development and changing face of zoology over the last century.

According to Professor Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan, the occasion was not only an opportunity to celebrate the department's longevity, but also to highlight its achievements.
