Winner: Creative-writing student Ceridwen Dovey walked off with the Centre for African Studies' prestigious Harry Oppenheimer Scholarship.

The Centre for African Studies (Cas) recently toasted the cream of its crop of postgraduates, presenting students with its annual cache of class prizes and bursaries. The centre's blue ribbon award, the Harry Oppenheimer Scholarship of R16 000, went to master's student in creative writing Ceridwen Dovey. Honours students Davina Jogi and Kate Reeler, who've matched each other in class as well, shared the Jack Simons Bursary, named in honour of the late Cas doyen. Jogi and Reeler each received R6 000. The centre also awarded class prizes, in the form of books donated by educational publishers Heinemann South Africa, to seven of its 2004 graduates. These were made to Mirah Langer, Simone le Fevre, Abby Loebenberg, Anna Luty, Stephen Poellot, Jill Weintroub and Kim Wildman.
