Taking a leaf out of the book of their women's singles first side, the UCT women's doubles side is now also on the brink of promotion to the Western Province premier league.

It took a bold move on behalf of coach Jackie Booth to get there, though. Booth - South Africa's top-ranked under-18 woman in 1987 before making her mark in the US - left her premier-league side at Camps Bay to team up with UCT singles' captain Siobhan Simpson in the UCT's doubles number one pair.

Amy Reid and Candice Faye are the second pair.

The strategy paid off in spades. The women have won all their games in this year's second division competition.

And a good win over Camps Bay this past Saturday could see UCT leapfrog Table View to take top spot in the division, and earn a place in next year's premier league.

"We have a tremendous team spirit and have received many compliments from opposing teams," says Booth.

Things aren't running that smoothly, though, for the men's sides - pair one Derek Pollard and Jacobus Scott, and second pair Noah and Craig Hall, UCT's new club champ and runner-up, respectively. They'll have to fight another year.

Hall and Schermbrucker have done well for UCT's mixed-doubles sides, however. It's the first time that UCT and the University of Stellenbosch have entered squads in the mixed-doubles event. That's been made possible by some considerate rescheduling by the WP league.
