LONG-STANDING UCT supporters "Woman Today", the daily 11h30 to 12h30 radio magazine programme on Safm 104–107, is celebrating 50 Years of Women on the Air with a month of celebratory programming in June.
The first radio programme for women, "Woman Today" took to the airwaves on June 30, 1952, as "Woman's World". According to editor, Hilary Reynolds, the show has since tried to reflect the changes in the lives of women around the world, and in South Africa in particular.
Currently, presenter Nancy Richards interviews around 1 500 women (and a fair share of men) each year. This roll call has included a number of UCT executives, including former Vice-Chancellor, Dr Mamphela Ramphele, and current Dean of Students, Dr Loveness Kaunda. Associate Professor Leslie Marx, Deputy Dean in the Humanities Faculty and a film and media lecturer with the Department of English, also served as the programme's film columnist for quite some time.
A regular peruser of Monday Paper's pages, "Woman Today" has picked up plenty of leads from the publication, and has interviewed a number of UCT researchers and students over the years, including Professor Frances Wilson, Director of the Centre for Social Science Research (CSSS), and computer science student Ilda Ladeira who plans to tell a traditional San story in the realm of virtual reality.
