ASSOCIATE Professor Franklin Larey, Director of UCT's South African College of Music (SACM), will temporarily forsake administration for performance next year when he travels to the United States to take up the Fulbright South African Researcher Scholarship that he was awarded recently.
Larey will spend six months (January to June) in the US. During this time he hopes to work with a number of leading concert pianists, including Andre Watts, considered to be one of the greatest pianists of the 20th Century. Larey hopes to be based at the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and will also make stopovers in New York and Bloomington.
He plans to concentrate on two musical traditions, i.e. German and 20th Century Russian, as expressed in the works of composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, Alexander Scriabin and Sergei Prokofiev. Larey's research in the US is in preparation for a commercial CD release in 2003.
