A strong group of former University of Cape Town (UCT) Ikey Tigers players are gracing the Rugby World Cup 2023 currently under way in France.

Four UCT alumni are competing in the Rugby World Cup: Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth and Damian de Allende (for the Springboks), and Huw Jones (for Scotland).

The Springboks, led by Kolisi, will play their third game of the tournament when they tackle Ireland on Saturday, 23 September, in a blockbuster Pool B clash (kick-off at 21:00 SA time) and all three Springbok players will be in action, while Scotland plays Tonga on Sunday, 24 September.

At the same time, UCT’s first rugby team is defending their crown at the World University Rugby Invitational Tournament (WURIT) in Bordeaux from 21 to 28 September.

The WURIT competition brings together the leading university rugby teams from across the globe, providing a platform for student athletes to excel, and fostering camaraderie among participants from diverse backgrounds.

As preparations ramp up in the lead to UCT Day on 6 October, alumni and friends of the institution abroad will be hosting a watch party for the Springboks’ game against Ireland on Saturday at Megan’s Kitchen and Bar in New York.

Attendees can expect a day of big-screen rugby action, connecting with old friends and a festival of games and fun.

Details of the watch party in New York:

Date: 23 September 2023

Time: 14:30 until 17:30 (match kick-off is at 15:00)

Location: Megan’s Bar and Kitchen
