Dear colleagues and students
It fills us with sadness as we write to inform you that Dr Gabi de Bie, chief scientist in the Department of Health Sciences Education, has passed away. She died on Tuesday, 6 October 2020, after a two-year battle with bone cancer.
Dr de Bie served as chief scientific officer in the Department of Human Biology from 2002 to 2017 and as president of the Scientific and Technical Officers’ Association at UCT from 2009 to 2017. Her working experience extended across molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, cancer diagnostics and human physiology.
She was passionate about students and came alive when interacting with them. Her teaching practices incorporated both the intellectual and social development of students and learners. Dr de Bie was loved by friends, colleagues and students for her intellectual curiosity and adventurous spirit. She has been described as an educator, scientist, scholar, writer and advocate for social justice and environmental sustainability. She will be remembered for her fondness and respect by her students and colleagues.
The family has organised a private funeral service. The Department of Health Sciences Education is making arrangements for a remembrance service for a small group of colleagues and will share further details at departmental level.
With her family, friends and all who knew her going through this time of grief, the university extends its heartfelt condolences and has reached out to offer support to Dr de Bie’s family.
Sincerely
The UCT Executive
