The power of voices: Supporting inclusivity through podcasting

The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT) within the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHED) has launched a podcast called The Learning Exchange. It is designed to serve as a platform to showcase innovative teaching and learning, pedagogical strategies, and the latest developments shaping the teaching and learning landscape.

Each episode of The Learning Exchange podcast is carefully curated to provide listeners with insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapidly changing educational environment. The episodes tackle a range of topics, including the presence and influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on teaching, learning and assessment practices; the integration of digital tools in the classroom; the implementation of blended learning models; and the crucial role of inclusivity in education.

A key feature of the podcast is its focus on universal design for learning (UDL), a set of principles that guide the development of inclusive teaching and learning experiences. UDL is highlighted through the expert contributions of Benedict Leteane, an MPhil student in Disability Studies and, at the time, a trainee learning designer. Leteane’s episodes delve into the practical application of UDL at UCT, offering educators tangible methods to create accessible and engaging learning environments for all students.

Bridging gaps and building connections

The podcast serves as a bridge that connects UCT’s educators and students across faculties. It represents CILT’s mission to not only respond to the immediate needs of the UCT community but also to contribute to broader conversations about education in the 21st century.

“This series is testament to our ongoing dedication to innovation in education,” said Nawaal Deane, the head of Course Curriculum Design at CILT. “Through engaging discussions and shared experiences, we aim to empower our educators and learners to navigate and shape the educational landscape.”

The podcast series is more than an academic resource; it is a catalyst for community building and development. By providing a space for educators and other stakeholders in the higher education teaching and learning context to share their experiences and insights, the series fosters a culture of continuous learning and collaboration and encourages engagement.

The CILT team encourages the UCT community to listen to the podcast and contribute to the ongoing conversation about educational innovation. “We’re excited about the potential of this series to spark new ideas and approaches that can enhance teaching and learning at UCT and beyond,” Deane added.
