Breaking Barriers: UCT PhD graduates champion justice and cyber-bullying

Dr Nombulelo Jokazi’s thesis delves into the often overlooked experiences of bully victims – individuals who both endure and respond to bullying.

Her innovative approach led to the development of a mobile application that allows victims to document their experiences in real-time, providing crucial insights into the factors influencing their behaviour. According to Jokazi, this tool not only empowers victims but also offers valuable data for understanding and addressing the cycle of bullying.

In another compelling study, PhD graduate, Dr Wesley Maraire focused on enhancing access to justice in Zimbabwe. His research critically examines the traditional justice systems that existed before colonisation and were later replaced by Roman Dutch law. By proposing a model that integrates traditional and contemporary legal frameworks, his work aims to extend justice to the over 60% of the population living in rural and peri-urban areas who remain underserved by the current legal system.
